Inspired by an African Giraffe munching on Acacia tree leaves, I abstracted its form into an adjustable desk lamp for task lighting, or an ambient lighting and reading lamp for living rooms & bedrooms.
The choice for a Giraffe stems from how Kenya’s history and culture is tied to its magnificent wildlife, which in turn also boosts its tourism. And just like how Nairobi National Park is brings the wild to the capital city, Twiga Mwangaza brings the wild into the comforts of your home.
Fully adjustable in terms of height, cantilever, head direction and shade opening, it is the delightfully versatile lamp for all spaces.
The body is made from lasercut steel, powdercoated a smooth white or black, with a pure aluminium hood. It comes with a B22 (Pin type) bulb holder with an integrated switch, and a 3-pin plug top. This is in the spirit of my studio: Right to repair. Instead of buying soldered bulbs from the market which when they die you end up throwing the whole fixture away, this commonly available bulb fitting allows you to swap the bulb to your liking. You can change colors, brightnesses or even upgrade to smart LED bulbs for various lighting effects.
This lamp has also won an Honorable Mention Award by Design Intelligence Award in 2022.
